Losing teeth can be a painful and traumatic experience. Often, patients have to have other complicated procedures to assist with dental health problems. Consequently, patients with missing or damaged teeth, often dread the prospect of having yet another procedure. However, the helpful staff at Meridian Street Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery wants you to know that there is no need to worry about your dental implant treatment. In most instances, your placement procedure can be quickly and safely done in just a few easy office visits. Here is some additional detail about what will happen if you choose Dr. Bennett for your dental implant placement process:
Before you can get that smile you have always dreamed about, a few measurements must be taken. This will be accomplished in your first appointment. Your first appointment is also a perfect chance for you to ask any additional questions you may have about your dental implant procedure.
The next stage involves attaching the artificial titanium root piece to your jawbone. During this procedure, a small hole will be drilled into your jawbone and the titanium implant fixture will be eased into the hole. After, this is done, you will be sent home to heal.
Once your implant fixture has healed sufficiently, you will return to expose the fixture piece once again and attach a middle piece called an abutment. Sometimes gum tissues have grown over the titanium piece and must be cleared away, so this part can sometimes be a bit tricky. After this part, you will then be sent home for a second period of healing. Just as with the first period of healing, you should avoid chewing on the implant site and carefully follow Dr. Bennett’s orders.
The next period of your dental implant procedure involves the careful crafting of your replacement tooth. This is an important part of the process because it will be specially designed to precisely match the color, shape, and function of your natural teeth. After this is done, Dr. Bennett will connect your new replacement tooth to the abutment piece. Once this happens, you can sit back and enjoy your stunning new smile!
After your dental implant surgery, you will be sent home with a detailed list of after-care instructions. You will need to avoid putting pressure on the implant site, restrict activities, and rest for the first day. Be aware that activities like bending, lifting, or strenuous physical activity can cause increased risk of bleeding, swelling, or other complications. Patients should expect mild pain and should inspect the site for any irregularities, swelling or excessive redness frequently. Any abnormalities should be reported to your doctor immediately.
This is one of the easier parts of getting dental implants because no extra steps are required. This means that you can keep your dental implants clean and healthy with regular brushing, flossing, and dental examinations. Patients should also inspect the implant site regularly to look for any signs of infection or abnormality.
Most of our patients are happy to report that their installation procedure was no more painful than a simple tooth removal. To ensure comfort during your procedure, general anesthetic will usually be administered to minimize any discomfort. After your procedure, over-the-counter pain medication like Advil or Aleve can usually be used to control any residual pain. Ice packs can also be administered to keep down swelling and reduce pain.
